SMU E.y.E Investment Club Hosts Students from Korea University

On 22nd June 2009, SMU E.y.E Investment Club hosted 12 students from the Investment and Finance Research Association (IFRA) from Korea University. IFRA is the first finance club in Korea and brings together a group of highly motivated individuals interested in finance to learn more about the industry.

The club was in Singapore for a 5-day fieldtrip to learn more and visit financial institutions and Korean bankers in the city. They had requested a session with SMU E.y.E Investment Club and we were more than happy to make new friends and learn more about their country.

Our President, Eugene Tan, a year 3 business student, introduced SMU E.y.E Investment Club and our activities whilst the IFRA President, Jin H. Jeon, did likewise for IFRA. Whilst there are similarities between the two clubs, both clubs have their own priorities and interests. SMU E.y.E focuses more on investing as a retail investor, looking at both fundamental and technical analysis to aid in the process while IFRA focuses on investment banking and covers M&A and Capital Markets. Nonetheless, both clubs still cover a generic breadth of economic and market issues.

Following the introductions, we proceeded to talk over a whole selection of local delicacies like satay, chicken rice, fried rice, popiah and, of course, the durian. Issues ranging from the economy to school life to culture were covered over the course of the two-hour session.

As the formalities drew to a close, the night was still young and in true SMU and Korea University fashion, we proceeded to Ice Cold Beer for a round of drinks. We are very glad to have had this opportunity to interact and make friends with our counterparts from Korea.

SMU E.y.E Investment Club would sincerely like to thank our seniors for taking time off to come down.

Alumni Night 2009

On 23 October, SMU E.y.E Investment Club hosted its annual Alumni Night ‘09 bringing together current members and seniors to hear their thought on different issues close to the hearts of all undergraduates, ranging from academic decisions, career paths, and investment philosophies. Seniors shared their internship experiences with current club members, providing a great opportunity for members to interact and network, which is in line with our objective to be a platform for members to gain insight to the working world.

The night began with an opening speech by our president, Eugene Tan (Year 3 Business Student) and transitioned to a sumptutous Thai buffet spread. The sharing session by seniors followed, where they came up to speak and share their experiences in the various firms, Dragonfly, GIC, and Credit Suisse. They provided interesting insights of the working world such as what is the possible job scope, what working attitudes and styles should be adopted while interning, and what were their takeaways from the internship experience. Their testimonials peppered with humourous anecdotes provided juniors with a clearer idea of what to expect during an internship, and we were able to gain an in-depth insight to the life of an intern working in the finance industry.

Hosted at the LKCSB Rooftop garden, members were surrounded by the wonderful view of the city lights and the light breeze. Coupled with great Thai food, tea light candles, light music, and impeccable company, it was a night to remember – a night to bond, share, and network.

Even though it was just a short three hours, it was rewarding and fulfilling experience, with new friends made and experiences shared. SMU E.y.E Investment Club would like to thank all participants for making this event a success, and we hope to provide members with more opportunities to widen their knowledge regarding the working world.
